How we label wash types
Map apps tell you where a car wash is. They rarely tell you what kind it is. This site does.
Where the listings come from
We start with every business Google Maps lists as a car wash in Texas and California, then remove mobile detailers and listings with no street address. That leaves 9,649 car washes, last checked in November 2026.
How a wash gets a label
A car wash only gets a label when something supports it: its name, how the business describes itself on Google and on its own website, the features it lists, or what at least two customers say in reviews. If we cannot tell, the listing says the type is not confirmed.
- Self-serve. Wash it yourself in a bay with a wand and foam brush. You pay by the minute with coins or a card.
- Touchless. High-pressure water and soap only. No brushes or cloth touch your paint.
- Express tunnel. Stay in the car and ride a conveyor through. Most sell monthly memberships.
- Drive-through automatic. Park in the bay and the machine moves around your car. Common at gas stations.
- Full service. Staff wash the outside and clean the inside while you wait.
- Hand wash. Washed and dried by people, usually with an interior clean available.
- Open 24 hours. Open around the clock, every day of the week.
- Free vacuums. Vacuums are included with a wash at no extra charge.
- Tesla-friendly. You stay in the driver’s seat, so nobody else has to drive your Tesla or find Car Wash Mode.
- Detailing. Deeper cleaning inside and out, such as shampoo, clay, wax and polish.
- Truck wash. Bays built for semis, trailers and other large rigs.
What can be wrong
Hours change, bays break and owners switch equipment. Labels drawn from reviews can also be out of date. Call the car wash before a long drive if a feature matters to you.
